Pharmaceutical products are protected against temperature fluctuations with customised thermal solutions

Transportation of pharmaceutical products requires the utmost caution and a stable temperature, as even the smallest fluctuations can reduce the quality and, in the worst case, destroy valuable medicine. At Combitherm, we provide thermal solutions that ensure the protection of your pharmaceutical products against temperature fluctuations during the entire transport operation - from production to final destination.

Stable temperature ensures the quality of pharmaceutical products

Transportation from producer to final destination involves several critical moments with a high risk of the cold chain being broken. This may be, e.g. at intermediate stations where the pharmaceutical products are stored before they can be loaded onto the truck or, at the airport, where the pharmaceutical products may be left on the aircraft parking slot for a longer period of time before they are loaded onto the aircraft. It can also be during the brief moments when the driver opens the doors of his truck to take out other goods. These transitions often involve significant temperature fluctuations in the surroundings, which can make it challenging to keep the temperature stable within the permitted ranges, such as 2-8°C or 15-25°C.

Meet requirements for documentation and quality controls

The task of transporting pharmaceutical products and medicines compared to other types of goods is significantly different. Nothing may be left to chance, as everything must be documented and quality-controlled according to, e.g. GDP rules. This places great demands on the way in which the goods are handled and stored during transport in order for the rules of good distribution practice for medicines to be met. It must, e.g. be possible to document that the required temperatures for the pharmaceutical products have been observed throughput the entire transport operation.

Our passive thermal solutions offer an effective way to stabilise the temperature of pharmaceutical products during all stages of transport. Our range includes our popular thermal covers, which can be customised according to specific requirements, objectives and needs.

The following industries use our thermal solutions:

  • Pharmaceutical product manufacturers
  • Transport and logistics companies
  • Forwarding agents
  • Distributors

Thermal covers for the pharmaceutical industry

Combitherm's thermal covers provide increased control over the temperature of pharmaceutical products and medicines, regardless of whether this is for shorter or longer shipments. It is then possible to keep the temperature within the permitted limit values in order to comply with the requirements for safe transport and handling of pharmaceutical products.

Our thermal covers are hygienic, antibacterial and easy to disinfect, so as to ensure an optimal environment for your valuable goods. We have thoroughly tested and checked all our solutions in order to provide you with a product that can give you the desired degree of assurance.

Case: Pharmaceutical goods comply with strict temperature requirements for thermal covers

Pharma Nord develops and produces medicines and dietary supplements, which are often transported by air to more than 40 countries. Transportation of these types of goods must live up to specific temperature requirements that must be complied with during all stages of transport, and the solution was Combitherm's thermal covers:

“We work within the product groups of medicines, vitamins and dietary supplements, and therefore work with very high quality standards in our company. We must therefore also control how the products reach the customer. By using Combitherm’s thermal covers, we achieve an even higher degree of assurance that our shipments comply with the temperature limits during transport.”

Claus Hansen, Supply Chain Manager and Chief Financial Officer at Pharma Nord.

Air cargo covers for the pharmaceutical industry

Our air cargo covers are part of our range of thermal covers, which provide effective protection against temperature fluctuations. The distinctive feature of our air cargo covers is that they are covered with a metallised surface, which provides effective protection against sunlight and reflects 97% of solar radiation. This significantly reduces the risk of heating the surfaces. The strong three-layer construction of outer foil, insulating material and inner foil keeps the products at the desired temperature interval during all stages of transport. The high quality of materials contributes to a lower TCO compared to disposable solutions.

Case: Air cargo covers protect goods during all stages of transport

DHL is the world’s foremost logistics company and provides a number of transport solutions within, i.a., the pharmaceutical and food industries, where the level of requirements for the temperature of freight during transport is high. DHL came up with an effective solution in collaboration with Combitherm:

“In connection with pharmaceutical transport, we operate under GDP, a strict set of rules, where we must at all times be able to document that we comply with the requirements for correct temperature during the entire transport process. Our solution is ‘DHL Thermonet’, which is 24-7 monitoring that continuously monitors the temperature of the goods through temperature loggers. The covers from Combitherm are an optimal solution in this area, as they meet our requirements for protection against huge temperature fluctuations on the tarmac, are easy to handle and an economically good alternative to active refrigeration units.”

Hanne Reher, Sub-Regional Sector Head for Life Science & Healthcare at DHL in the Nordic and Baltic region
